A popular restaurant known for its family-friendly atmosphere and ice cream has closed its doors. Friendly's in Toms River on Route 37 has closed its location as of Monday night (Nov. 21), the Patch reports. The restaurant, near the Berkeley Township border and the BJ’s Wholesale Club is closed permanently due to unspecified reasons. Employees of the Route 37 location were informed Monday that it was closing, according to one who asked not to be named per the Patch.

The township once had four locations and now only one remains. The Friendly's on Hooper Avenue restaurant across from the Ocean County Mall is the only Toms River location left.

Friendly's has filed for bankruptcy in last couple of years but most recently was for the financial struggle during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Franchise Wire reported. The famed restaurant and ice cream parlor was purchased in January 2021 by Amici Partners Group, Fox Business reported. The new owner has been trying to keep returning customers by introducing a rewards program and enticing new guests with new menu items.
