As if this January hasn’t been cold enough, Philadelphia could be in for another round of winter weather by the end of the month. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the potential is increasing for a significant winter storm to impact the eastern United States this coming weekend, January 31 through February 1. While exact details are still uncertain, forecasters say conditions are lining up for a possibly strong event.

Meteorologists are watching a high-altitude disturbance diving out of Canada on Thursday, which could deepen over the East Coast by Saturday, forming a strong surface low-pressure system. When that system collides with the very cold air mass already in place, it could produce widespread heavy precipitation across the region—from Washington, D.C., to Boston, and yes, right through the Philadelphia area.

According to AccuWeather and other forecast models, what happens next depends largely on the track and intensity of that low-pressure system. If it hugs the coast, heavy snow could blanket Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs; if it moves farther inland, the city could see a wintry mix or even rain.

For now, the National Weather Service urges residents to stay tuned as more data comes in this week. The storm’s timing, track, and exact impacts—especially on travel—will become clearer by midweek. Either way, the cold pattern isn’t going anywhere soon, so Philadelphia residents should keep their snow shovels close and stay updated on the latest forecasts.

Stay with local meteorologists and the NWS Mount Holly office for daily updates as this potential winter storm evolves.
